Kidapawan City – A juvenile female yellow-headed water monitor lizard (Varanus cumingi), locally known as “bayawak,” was successfully rescued and returned to its natural habitat in Kidapawan City. The 1-kilogram, 3-foot-long reptile was found trapped in the kitchen area of a residence owned by Mr. Mike Louie Gayramar in Apo Sandawa Subdivision, Barangay Poblacion, Kidapawan City on the afternoon of September 9, 2024.
Upon discovering the animal, the homeowner promptly turned it over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) – PENRO Cotabato. A thorough health check was conducted by DENR personnel, confirming that the lizard was in good condition, with no injuries or parasites. After ensuring its well-being, the lizard was released back into the wild on the same day.
The yellow-headed water monitor lizard is classified as an “Other Threatened Species” (OTS) under DENR Administrative Order 2019-09, though it is currently listed as “Least Concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This highlights the importance of continued efforts to protect wildlife species, even those not yet considered at high risk. PENRO Cotabato reminds the public to avoid disturbing wildlife and to allow them to remain in their natural environments. However, if a wild animal is found in a dangerous situation or poses an immediate threat, citizens are encouraged to contact the nearest DENR office for assistance. The public can reach DENR PENRO Cotabato through hotlines: 0917-108-1316, 0917-108-5024, or the Front Desk at (064) 577-1412.
