Kidapawan City, COTABATO – – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-PENRO) Cotabato successfully released a female Philippine Hanging Parrot (Loriculus philippensis), locally known as “Colasisi,” back into the wild on January 7, 2025, in Kidapawan City.
The bird, classified as Critically Endangered under DENR Administrative Order No. 2019-09 (Updated National List of Threatened Philippine Fauna), was voluntarily surrendered by a concerned citizen. The individual acted responsibly after learning about the parrot’s conservation status and the need for legal permits to keep wildlife.
DENR-PENRO Cotabato commended the citizen’s action, highlighting the importance of public cooperation in preserving wildlife. The Philippine Hanging Parrot, the smallest parrot species in the country, faces significant threats due to habitat loss and illegal wildlife trade.
