Kidapawan city, Cotabato –A Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), a migratory bird species, was rescued on October 12, 2025 in Barangay Poblacion, Kidapawan City after it fell behind a boarding house near a school when it was attacked by crows. Concerned citizens Sheila N. Olay, a teacher, and her husband safely retrieved the weakened bird and turned it over to DENR-PENRO Cotabato on October 14, 2025.
Based on the initial assessment, the bird is in good condition but exhibited signs of weakness due to the fall and lack of food. It is currently under close observation and temporary care at PENRO Cotabato and will be released back into the wild once fully recovered. The species is commonly found in wetlands such as marshes, lakes, rivers, and tidal flats, with a wingspan of 98 cm, body length of 61 cm, and weight of around 560 grams.
DENR reminds the public that migratory birds are protected under Republic Act No. 9147, or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. The agency urges everyone to report injured or rescued wildlife to the nearest DENR office to support ongoing efforts in protecting wildlife and maintaining ecological balance.
