Kidapawan City<\/strong> \u2013 A juvenile Reticulated Python (Malayopython reticulatus<\/em>), locally called Sawa<\/em>, Baksan<\/em>, or Baos<\/em>, was safely rescued and released back into its natural habitat on December 2, 2024, in Kidapawan City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rescue operation unfolded after Gemma R. Pragados spotted the snake hiding in her house ceiling. The python, approximately 7.5 feet long and weighing 3 kilograms, was later captured within the compound of Leonardo D. Salvilla, a neighbor of Pragados. Salvilla reported a series of mysterious losses, including cats, chicks, and rats, which were likely preyed upon by the snake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognizing the need for professional intervention, the incident was immediately reported to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-PENRO Cotabato, through the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Kidapawan City. The PENRO Cotabato Wildlife Rescue Team quickly responded, ensuring the python\u2019s safe retrieval and thorough assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After an expert evaluation, the python was found to be in excellent health\u2014free from injuries, broken bones, or parasites. Its shiny scales and robust condition confirmed its readiness for release into the wild, where it contributes to the ecosystem by controlling pest populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Classified as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Reticulated Python remains vulnerable to threats such as habitat destruction, hunting, and persecution stemming from fear. PENRO Cotabato emphasizes the importance of coexisting with wildlife and urges the public to leave animals undisturbed in their habitats whenever possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
